ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Steve Law was raised in a forest environment. He began working in the woods behind a pair of horses and using an ax and crosscut saw. His mentor was his dad, Fred Law, who had worked the Maine logging camps from 1913 to 1923. Steve received a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering from the University of Maine in 1958. After graduation, he went to work for the United States Forest Service. He worked on national forests in New Hampshire, Vermont, California, Virginia and Alaska. National forests are required by law to practice multiple-use management. They have been doing so for about 100 years. During the last 15 years of his tenure, Steve was a member of the top management staff on forests in Virginia and Alaska. Steve served two years in the Maine Legislature, where he served on the Energy and Natural Resources Committee. It was while in the state Legislature he became the primary author of legislation that established the "THE FORESTS FOR THE FUTURE" program administered by the Department of Conservation. This law was later stricken from the books and replaced with laws based on rules and regulation as the way to gain compliance.
